The Coach Who Never Punts

Here’s a fun video about high school football coach, Kevin Kelly of Pulaski Academy in Little Rock, Arkansas, who never punts, regardless of his field position. On kickoffs, he kicks nothing but onside kicks.

This is an excellent example of a coach who has re-examined conventional thinking about his sport and defied public pressure to use a strategy that seems to work better.

In this video, he the rationale behind his no-punting strategy.

Even if you’re not a football fan, this video is worth watching just to observe the thought process that led him to his radical strategy.

In a postscript to this article, after nine state championshipsCoach Kelly decided to take his skills to the college ranks and assumed the head coaching position at Presbyterian College, a small liberal arts college in Clinton South Carolina. His first season, in 2021, was a rocky one and after a record of 2-9, he stepped down “to pursue other football interests.”  You can follow his high school and college careers through the Overtime SZN reality series, “The Coach Who Never Punts.” Just type it into Youtube.
